Where am I?

I picked the city banner of Portand Oregon because they didn't have one for Vancouver Washington, which is where I really grew up. Being the gypsy that I am though, I did live in Portland for a short 3 or 4 months back in 1963...and it was from that city that I launched myself into the world...via California.

What used to be called the Valley of the Heart's Delight in California is my home now.  Has been for over 40 years.  I have had short sojourns in other locations (Beaumont Texas in 1978 - about 5.5 months) but I realized that wasn't where I belonged.  I've been to Mexico and Canada and Italy (I am convinced that was home to me in another life--it just felt soooo comfortable). But I live in the self proclaimed capital of Silicon Valley now...the orchards are gone, and we have high rise apartments and condos and freeways and a new city hall that goes up 18 floors.  This valley has been transformed right before my eyes while I have been busy living my life here.

My daughter, a native of this place, has transplanted herself to another place in this big old world: Tampa Florida.  I have now visited Tampa a total of six times and it now feels like a home away from home.  The parts of my life lived there are mostly related to my wonderful son-in-law and his family, who embraced my daughter and helped her make the transition from "stranger in a strange land" to graduate of the university, summa cum laude (proud mother beaming).

So here I am, in my own home, on a beautiful Sunday morning ready to head out to The Mission to meet with the 10 am Community for some singing and listening and nourishment...

SOLSTICE

The first day of summer...95 degrees and humidity 13%. We are in the fire season early this year. But today the sky was blue, the early morning clouds were whiffy and white, and my dwelling is tolerable without air conditioning. We walked to the store (about a block away) and bought a little food. We won't drive anywhere today. I'm talking green at home now...it's getting really personal. Watched a CNN program called "We Were Warned OUT OF GAS" which projected a very grim what if: Al Qaeda bombs the Saudi Arabian oil fields and then a monster hurricane wipes out the oil refineries around Houston Texas. Prognosis: not very good.

Background reading: Wouk "The Glory", Crill "Charlie Wilson's War"

But all in all it's been a wonderful first full day of summer. Note: Summer Solstice was officially reached at 4 something yesterday afternoon...it was VERY hot...I walked out of work and into an oven. Gallant young people took pity on the old lady and gave her a ride to the light rail station. Whew!

Trying this out...again

I've been "inspired" by Sanachan again to try this medium.  Decided to edit the look all on my own.  I have a lot of things I should comment about...for whoever...like the fact that I am soooo tech challenged and can really waste a lot of time just trying to figure out how to use a tool like this.

Currently in California...the land is being blanketed by streams of smoke from various major fires.  The sky last night turned a sulpherous yellow-brown and it got dark kind of early...considering we are almost to the longest day of the year.  But this morning the cloud cover is burning off and blue sky is once again visible...guess the wind switched again.

So now I need to get busy and get on with my day.  Cheers!

A mystery

How well do you know your next-door neighbors?

This sentence is a mystery to me.  It just appeared when I said "restore" from some place in memory. If I wrote it originally, I have no idea what I was going to talk about. Truth is...I don't know very much about my next-door neighbors even though we share one wall in an apartment.
grrrr, how do you post the super villain results to your live journal? that is the question.

GROWING UP

It seems that we never finish growing up. Here I am in my 6th decade and still haven't got it figured out. The battle of the sexes rages on even when sex is no longer an issue. Power is really the issue. Well I am who I am...female...and I don't care to be someone's doormat or substitute mom or housekeeper. I want to be happy...so I'll keep on studying this journey called my life and see what I can do to keep me happy.

The French Gypsy finds her voice

Some time ago, my daughter gave me a live journal to write in. Since I am a pretty private person, I said thank you and never used it. Today, I'm going to use it. I've been following the events down South pretty closely because not only does my daughter live in that part of the country, but also my husband's family...in Beaumont, Texas. The eye of Rita passed pretty close to that town (it's just a little north of Port Arthur which got a direct hit).

Anyway, it seems that humans can still do some pretty amazing and wonderful things when the chips get down...especially, still, Americans. We are a pretty dysfunctional nation a lot of the time, but sometimes we can rise above the trivia of the endless moment and act. It gives me hope.

Now I'm going to see if I can post this first attempt somewhere. Cheers to any who may stumble across my ramblings.
